MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!!

Tuesday 5^th May our first team ended its commitments for the season 2008 – 2009.  We played the relegation play-off against Xaghra United F.C.  This was the match that our team had to win to keep our status of playing 1^st Division football. From days ahead, while we were preparing ourselves for this decider, we all knew that we were favourites but on the other hand we all knew that on a single match everything could happen.  A single episode during a match like this can change the whole course of a match.  Many of us during the game thought that this was going to happen when after 25 minutes of play our Serbian player Darko Stojanovic was sent off.  According to the referee Darko’s  celebrations for his own goal were exaggerated.  The worries increased when our striker Josef Debrincat was sent off too, 10 minutes after the break when he received his 2^nd yellow card for a hands ball in the three quarters area.  At this time the score was 1-0 for our team.  From then onwards our boys showed their real character and they fought bravely to score three more goals and finish the game on high flying colours.

The administration was more than happy for the results achieved during this campaign.  This was our sixth consecutive season playing 1^st Division football and the second consecutive season competing with a squad of players with an average age of 20 years; all the boys coming up from our Nursery.  Added to these promising boys were two Serbian foreigners together with our skipper Milos Stojanovic, today the latter being recognised by the G.F.A. as a local player.  This squad was guided tactically, technically and physically by two coaches Messrs. Victor Caruana and Louis Grech.  They also did a very good job.  The results show that although our team was young and with almost no experience at all, not a single team managed to take all the nine points from our team.  This means that we won points from every opponent.  Perhaps our failure was when we faced opponents who were positioned behind us during the whole season.

All in all the players, coaches and committee members, from the very first matches of this season were aiming to avoid the big drop.  This target was reached thanks to You All. 

The joy and celebrations from our players and committee members after last Tuesday’s match were more that deserved.  They were welcomed at the club house by many followers who congratulated them for their great efforts.

At Kercem we are all proud of You Boys and I must admit that with every football follower I met these last days, everyone had words of praise for our players especially for  the huge efforts they made during the decider against Xaghra.  On behalf of all our players and coaching staff I thank everyone for these compliments. 

Yes, let’s all together enjoy this success.  But please do not forget that the show must go on and everyone at Kercem must do his best to prepare for next season.  There are a lot of obstacles on our way, but I am sure that after we accomplished our mission last Tuesday we have to look forward and with the aid of everyone in this small village we will one day not very far realize our dreams.
